Can pigs eat bread? Are bread crumbs good for potbelly pigs? Pigs are omnivorous animals that eat everything they come across the way. As a result, many pig farmers turn to local bakeries to get the lowest-priced bread to feed the pigs to save some money.

But is feeding pigs with bread safe?

Can pigs eat bread?

Yes, pigs can eat bread. As far as the bread is healthy, it is safe for them to eat. Also, it is economical to provide energy-giving food to your pigs.

While they can be safely consumed without harm, it is not recommended to feed pigs only bread. Pigs require a balanced diet rich in vitamins, protein, and fiber for optimal health.

Too much bread can cause obesity and other health issues due to the lack of nutritional variety. Therefore, the bread should be given as a treat or supplement to their diet.

Benefits of feeding bread to Pigs

1. It is cost-effective

One of the reasons most pig owners result to feeding pigs bread is that it is cheap to come by. You can easily sort out low-priced bread or bread crunch from bakeries.

Also, you can get day-old bread at a good price from the bakery because they are sometimes hard to sell. So you can see that feeding them with pigs is very cheap compared to buying special feed.

2. Easy to Feed

Bread is one of the simplest feeds to give to your pig. You don’t need to cook, mix, measure, or prepare it. You simply get the bread, dump it on their plates, and that’s all.

The pigs will just come running to eat the bread. Pigs love eating bread. Also, bread is easy to store. All you have to do is put them somewhere safe, like big empty packets, in the refrigerators, kitchen, or dining room cabinets.

Can Pigs Eat Moldy Bread?

moldy bread

Moldy or damaged bread contains Fusarium molds and aflatoxin, which can be very toxic to pigs, resulting in reproductive failure, reduced performance, organ failure, and possibly death.

Therefore, giving moldy or damaged bread to pigs is highly risky. The toxins produced by Fusarium molds and aflatoxins have numerous detrimental effects, including direct damage to the pig’s liver and immune system, and they may also interfere with protein synthesis and metabolism.

Ultimately, feeding bad bread to pigs can lead to major livestock health issues, reductions in productivity and major economic losses for pig farmers. It’s best practice to provide pigs with fresh, nutritious, and safe feed to ensure their health and well-being and maintain the meat quality.

Is bread good for pigs?

two pigs eating

1. Don’t make bread the main diet

Due to the economical nature of bread, most pig owners will be tempted to turn bread into a portion of everyday food for the pigs. While this is not wrong or may not cause any side effects quickly, the bread won’t give you pigs the nutrient they need to grow properly.

2. It is lacking in vital nutrients

Bread isn’t a complete diet and lacks essential fiber, vitamins, and protein. Pigs only contain carbohydrates. And pigs need the entire above nutrient to grow and function properly.

So feeding your pigs solely on bread can cause some deficiencies in the pigs over a long period that may result in illness that could be prevented.

Also, in feeding pigs,  it is advised that you go for bread made of a formulated grain mixture and not of other refined grain products. This is because the former is more nutritious and gives the pigs the needed vitamins and minerals for proper growth.

3. Can lead to obesity and off-tasty meat

The carbohydrate composition of the bread can cause an increase in the body weight of the pigs. And when given without any other fiber diet, it can build up too many calories, making the pig fat.

So now, fat will cover and consume the meat, making the meat less tasty. When you kill it for meat, you will need to throw most of the meat in the trash, for it will have to turn to fat or be covered in fat. It will end up in the trash can. You want a pig that gains weight but in the meat.

So this kind of fat is an increment in fatty components, not the meat composition.

4. It can cause stinkiness

I  have observed that when pigs feed too much on baked food, they suddenly develop this strange smell. And it has to do with the limited amount of fiber in the pig’s body.

Naturally, pigs smell a little bit. You may not notice if your pigs are kept hygienically. You may not want your pig to come into a place and the place begins to smell, so reduce the amount of time you feed them with bread, even though they love it.

5. Can Lead to Constipation

Constipation is another issue that may arise from the lack of fiber in the pig’s body. In the same way, you get backed up when you are only eating carbohydrates without taking enough fruits and vegetables. The same thing happens to the pigs. A whole grain bread contains less than 1% fiber which isn’t healthy for the pigs.

If you want your pigs to have a healthy poop without the stress of constipation, ensure you feed only a few pounds of bread daily. The lesser the weight of the pigs, the less the amount of bread. You can consider mixing the bread diet with fiber, protein, or vitamin-rich diets.

6. Ensure your pigs have enough exercise daily

There is this saying that the pigs continuously go out and have more tasty meat than those raised in confinement. This has proved to be true because the pigs of the early 1960s have sweeter and more tasty meat than today.

An active pig is a healthy pig, and bread gives energy to the pigs. So after they finished feeding on bread, let them roam for a few hours. Let them go hunt for bugs and small insects and forage. This will make them explore and eat different food that can complement their bread eating. And trust me; your pigs will be healthier this way.

Conclusion

Pigs are great bread lovers but ensure you serve them only a few pounds of bread that correlate with their body weight. Never serve them spoilt bread for any reason to avoid causalities.
